The research centre here at SMARTRI is a hive of activity, with researchers studying everything from the effect of rodenticides on barn owls to the carbon dynamics of an oil palm estate. By working with such a diverse team, the BEFTA Project has been able to collate data on a wide range of variables all associated with the BEFTA plots. Key to this has been the collection of yield data, coordinated through SMARTRI, which has been collected since January. This information, which includes the numbers of fruit bunches and bunch weight for each of the 500 or so palms across the plots, is invaluable and represents an enormous amount of difficult and careful work on the part of the field team. Without knowing the yield of these palms it is impossible to assess the effect of our experimental treatment on oil palm productivity.
